Election Day Coverage on Medill

Journalist Jen Thomas covered our efforts on Election Day:

On Election Day, a candidate runs – and runs – on adrenaline

"At 5 a.m., most people are nestled comfortably in their beds, trying to catch just a couple more hours of precious sleep before the sun rises, even on Election Day.

But Jeremy Karpen, his wrinkled green T-shirt at odds with the suit pants and dress shoes he’s wearing, has already been awake for several hours. Karpen, running for state representative on Chicago’s Northwest Side, said he practically leaped out of bed when his alarm went off at 3 a.m. and he’s been running off adrenaline ever since."

No Contest? No democracy

Journalist Kelly Rix writes about our race again HERE

"In the 39th district, which covers the Logan Square neighborhood, the Green Party’s Jeremy Karpen is running against the Democratic incumbent, Maria Antonia “Toni” Berrios. She also happens to be the daughter of Cook County Board of Review commissioner Joseph Berrios, which is probably not a coincidence given the penchant for political nepotism in Chicago.

Toni Berrios has never been opposed in a general election before, but now Logan Square residents will actually have a choice in electing their state representative. Regardless of who ends up winning, I’m sure it has been a positive thing for them to finally have more than one option and to finally get a little attention from the candidates."

Sun Times Endorses Jeremy

From the Chicago Sun Times:

"39th District: This Northwest Side district has been represented by Maria Antonia "Toni" Berrios since 2003, when her father, the Cook County Democratic chairman, installed her in the job. She's inexperienced and not considered a productive legislator.

We prefer Green candidate Jeremy Karpen, a therapist for troubled youth at a residential treatment center in Chicago. He strongly supports school finance reform and increased funding for mass transit and has some innovative ideas on campaign finance and electoral reform."

Illinois Seeing Green

Journalist Kelly Rix covered our race HERE

"Another candidate that the Illinois Greens think has a good shot at winning is Jeremy Karpen, who is running for State Representative in the 39th District, which includes Logan Square.

“The incumbent [in the 39th District], Toni Berrios, is the daughter of the Democratic county chairperson, Joe Berrios, and we are seeing a lot of strong reaction in the neighborhood to politics as usual and nepotism,” Huckelberry said. “And people are really happy they actually have a choice this time [because] she’s never had an opponent in the general election before.”"
